- Harvard University graduate employees have voted 1,931 to 1,523 to join a union. The victory is especially sweet at a time when graduate employees at private universities have had to fight their way to official representation: Despite their workload teaching and doing research, universities insist they are primarily students, not workers, and therefore do not need union representation. Graduate employee unions are long-established at public institutions, including many affiliated with the AFT, and have won fair pay, benefits and supports like child care for their members. The Harvard union is affiliated with the United Auto Workers, and must still be certified by the National Labor Relations Board.
