PROVIDENCE — Providence teachers voted overwhelmingly Friday to ratify a new three-year contract, putting an end to months of fractious debate with the state education commissioner.
Providence Teachers Union President Maribeth Calabro said she was “relieved” that the contract was finally resolved and said she thought it was fair. She said it will feel great to start the school year without the acrimony of negotiations hanging over people’s heads.
When asked if there was any discussion of a longer school day, Calabro said the union offered to extend the day by 30 minutes but management turned it down. She said it would have amounted to four additional weeks of learning for students.
The union later clarified that McKee’s office was not the one that turned down the longer school day offer.
